The Art of Fund Raising - Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover

Email Print PDF

My husband and I are traveling in CA wine country this week.  Being born and bred in Alabama (though currently living in Atlanta,) neither of us has ever had occasion to visit this lovely part of the country.  Yesterday, we found ourselves riding along the famous Pacific coast highway enjoying the scenery of crashing waves to the left of us and majestic mountainsides to the right, complete with cows! grazing among the pastures.  So, awesome scenery makes us hungry and we stop a cute little local restaurant right on the coast to soak up more scenery while we ate.  As it happens, we were seated in a cozy (read: cramped) solarium with about  three other tables.  As soon as the waiter leaves from taking our order, a woman leans over to me and asks where I'm from.  Apparently my order has amused her and when I reply "originally from Alabama," she and her companions titter and ask me to "say anything."  Yes, they are definitely getting a kick out of my accent.  The male at the table commented he didn't think he had ever met anyone from AL before and seemed surprised that I had all my teeth plus could "talk good."  So, what does this little story have to do with the art of fund raising?  In my experience, I have found some of the biggest givers to be those who you wouldn't expect to have a dime to their name.  They're humble, seek no glory for their gift and have a passion for the causes they support.  Pay attention to those around you that seem eager to volunteer for you and may already have been contributing in small ways.  You never know what jewel you might just uncover.
